S.H.S. Best of 2013

2013 was yet another incredible year for music. If this trend continues, the future as a fan and artist is looking very bright. This year, I decided to change up the format to include more releases & little to no commentary. A lot of these selections won't surprise you if you take a look at the posts throughout the year. Remember though: this will cover all genres, despite the blog's typical focus on punk, hardcore, and metal.

Year End Quickies

The fourth quarter of 2013 has had me tied up with other priorities and interests to the point where I have not been able to post or review as many great albums I have been listening to as I would like... Having just posted a massive update of short reviews based on the topic of A389 Recordings, I decided to do a similar post of shorts for other bands as well.

A389 Records Updates

If you haven't been keeping up with A389 in the fourth quarter, this post is for you...

If you like it, please support the band. The physical LP has a sick colorway.

"Punk Fashion" (newly revised)

Punk Fashion... where do I begin? The very idea is almost an oxymoron... The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC has recently opened an exhibit called Punk: From Chaos to Couture. Unfortunately, as The New Yorker magazine aptly pointed out, this was a failure on multiple levels... (continued after the jump)

Ilsa Announces New Member - Domenic Romeo of A389 Records!

OKAY! Big announcement time! As I previously posted, Garrett is leaving Ilsa. I also hinted that we would be getting a flashy young guitarist to replace him. Well, I lied. He's not young, he's an old fart like me! Our new guitar player is none other than Domenic Romeo, head of A389 records and former axe slinger for Pulling Teeth! We are very excited to start writing and playing with Dom! In case anyone was worried, We are still playing DeathFest! That, along with our dates in New Haven, Montreal, and Toronto will be Garrett's last shows with us! So come out and say goodbye to Garrett, and help us usher in a new era of ILSA with Dom!

Further Left For Dead/Chris Colohan Updates

In case you have been living under a rock... Chris Colohan is kind of a big deal in the hardcore scene. He's been the driving force behind such past and present bands as Haymaker, Left For Dead, The Swarm, Cursed, Countdown to Oblivion, Ruination, Burning Love, and more. Left For Dead recently reunited for the second time since the 90's, and they recently put out a reissue through A389 Recordings. Now, according to their blog plans to continue on have fully come to fruition.

I am re-blogging/hyping this, after the jump...

Jon Theodore To Be On The New Queens Of The Stone Age

Jon Theodore, who was behind the kit on The Mars Volta's debut full-length "De-Loused In The Comatorium" will be on the new Queens of The Stone Age record. If you are a drummer or just a fan of stellar, genius level drum work, this is incredible news. I can't wait to hear this. I haven't heard him play since that short lived project he did with Zach De La Rocha, called One Day As A Lion.

S.H.S. Album Review - Darkthrone: The Underground Resistance

The moment we've been waiting for is finally here. If you're like me, you have been eagerly awaiting the full album release ever since the promo version of 'Leave No Cross Unturned' first appeared on Peaceville's SoundCloud page. Would the new album be their finest moment, or would it only tarnish their legacy? Would they go 'all power metal' on us? Time to find out.

My Bloody Valentine Returns After 21 Years!

After over 21 years, we finally have a sequel to Loveless, an album which I have always held in high regard throughout the years. Last night when the news dropped via the band's Facebook page, I instantly went on their site and found that the servers had crashed, to no-one's surprise. If you have not stepped outside of your heavy genre, this is the band that invented that stuff before the blast beats on your Deafheaven record! Their sweeping influence cannot be denied. It's hypnotic and psychedelic, a soundtrack for those who are lost. The new album retains their signature raw, wall-of-sound fuzz, and was recorded true to their roots in analogue. According to the official site, "The vinyl is a true analogue cut, i.e. it hasn't been put through a digital process during the cutting process unlike over 90% of all vinyl available today."

S.H.S. Local Metal Spotlight (Tri-State Area)

 Dystrophy

...is a thrash/death metal band from New Brunswick, NJ.  They lie somewhere between the old and new sounds. What makes this group specialist that they jump effortlessly between the aforementioned styles and even add in some great melodic metal partsI personally have seen them perform at RTF Fest 2011 and was blown away by their musicianship. I think I recognized the drummer from a band called 'Sick Fuck,' only a year prior to the show. If that's true he diligently got the new band's material ready in a short time frame, considering how well he performed.

S.H.S. Label Spotlight - A389 Recordings

S.H.S Label Spotlight

A389 Recordings was started around the year 2004 by Dominic Romeo in Baltimore, formerly of the bands Slumlords, Pulling Teeth, & more. Although today it's one of the top labels for hardcore fans and record enthusiasts, Dom started it much like many other great DIY labels... just to get his friend's bands some exposure. Even after over 120 releases, the man still runs things entirely by himself...  with two children and a day job to boot. I discovered A389 only a couple years ago, mostly through love of the band Pulling Teeth, and the label's increasing visibility on the web helped too. I have always been drawn to heavy hardcore with occult imagery, such as Integrity, and its no surprise that Dwid Hellion contributes quite a bit to A389 on top of his own endeavors.

Coming across A389 was intertwined with my then new-found obsession with collecting vinyl. Dom recognizes that in the 'digital age' certain things are lost and recognizes the charm of physical media. I applaud his respect for getting each band's complete expression appreciated in the truest sense. This means a record to hold, and listen to, from start to finish, in the order it was meant to be heard. Large artwork, to give your imagination a starting point, and a lyrics insert, so you can fully dive into each song before seeing the band perform live. Digital downloads are included as an extra, as they should be, for convenience of listening on the go after absorbing the record initially. Eschewing major-label faux mystique, all of the albums he puts out can be previewed right on the A389 official bandcamp, so you know exactly what you are purchasing.

Unfortunate But Expected - The Mars Volta Breaks Up

Cedric Bixler-Zavala full Twitter statement:

Thank u 2 all VOLTA fans u deserved more especially after the way u rooted for us on this album. I tried my hardest to keep it going but Bosnian Rainbows was what we all got instead. I can’t sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta. I honestly thank all of you for buying our records and coming to our shows. You guys were a blast to play in front of. We could never had done it with out you. My dream was to get us to the point were Jon Theodore and Ikey Owens came back but sadly it’s over. Thank u a million times over for ever giving a fuck about our band. For the record I tried my hardest to get a full scale North American tour going for Noctourniquet but Omar did not want to. I guess a break from mars volta means starting another band and ignoring all the support the fans gave us. I tried my hardest guys. All I can do is move forward with my music and just be happy that mars volta ever happened at all. God Damn we had a blast. Thank u again. And no I’m not joking about any of this, I owe it 2 u guys to all fans to be serious about this. Thank u to all past members who helped Volta along as well. we blasted through like a comet and left our mark! If u ever see me in person and want to know why I’ll tell u my story. Please just be happy that it happened at all remember all the opposition we were met with for just starting a new band back in 2001.(sic)

Stormshadow Reunion & Reissue Announced

Stormshadow was a metal-influenced punk band from New Brunswick, NJ, active from around 1995 to 2000. I saw them play among the bands Fanshen, Kamikaze, Worthless, The Scarlet Letter and more at what were some of my very first hardcore/punk shows in NB. I had the privilege of being over there as a Rutgers student during a great time in the hub city's DIY punk history. Mixing raw and clean vocals, Matty King and Sue Werner stand out in my memory as creating a chaotic and cathartic live performance that was at times politically charged as well.

An old patch from my collection:

Matty King, Jamie, Paul, Pedro, & Zak are also currently playing as The Match & The Moth
