A389 Records Updates

If you haven't been keeping up with A389 in the fourth quarter, this post is for you...

It's been a big year for one of my favorite record labels, A389 Recordings, having been named best Baltimore record label, and one of their most exciting bands Noisem, being named best new metal band by the City Paper.

You can read the entries here:

I have nothing but the highest form of respect for Dom and what he is doing, as I have said many times before...

Year-end is always an exciting time for A389 due to the annual bash, which coming up fast, and those who are lucky enough to go this year will be enjoying bands such as Infest, Haymaker, Full of Hell, Integrity, ('Systems Overload' lineup!) Weekend Nachos, Noisem, Ringworm, Pharaoh, and so many more. I won't be attending this year, but I know from the past how good this is going to be. I believe hate5six will be thankfully providing full HD coverage.

BLOODLET will even be re-forming for an exclusive appearance at the A389 bash, and there will be a special 7” of an unreleased track to celebrate as well as an A389/Victory Records collab to give the band’s classic first LP ‘Entheogen’ a deluxe reissue as a double LP.

All of this has got me to realize I have been behind lately in checking out the newest crop of bands to hit the label, since around the October time frame to the present. The purpose of this post is to get myself back up to speed and share what I have found... Prepare your ears!

First up is a preview for the title track of a new 7" from Haymaker, coming in January or February entitled 'Let Them Rot.' This is very tight dbeat/fast, angry hardcore that we know and love.

 Listen:

In late November, a band called Napalm Christ was added to the roster.  According to EarSplitCompound, the four men who form NAPALM CHRIST have collectively spent time at war with the mainstream in Rwake, Shredding Corpse, Pale Unearthed, Shitfire, Witch’s Tit and others for the better part of two decades. This Little Rock based band that was initially intended to be a side project, will be coming out with a debut full-length on A389 soon. For now, check out some killer death/doom metal from their free demo on their bandcamp.

Sick/Tired is a grindcore-ish band out of Chicago, Illinois. Apparently they have members that are ex-Weekend Nachos and MK Ultra. Based on their Bandcamp page, they have a lot of releases under their belt, and were welcomed to the A389 family in November. I listened to the Manufractured EP, which came out in Sept. on Profane Existence and was very impressed. They are up there with the sickest GC bands, and they do these little death metal breakdowns too. In fact, it's truly hard to define what their sound really is. The band is playing the A389 bash and Maryland Deathfest, and Dom announced that in the summer, their new record will come out on A389 Recordings.

Listen:

Empire of Rats is a breakdown-heavy metallic hardcore band out of Columbus OH. We know of them from their promising 2012 EP "No Peace." Their self-titled debut full length came out late October, and it has been in heavy rotation on my player ever since. Tough!!!

Check out this music video:

Sex Prisoner was added to the A389 fam in late September. From Arizona and being around since 2009 they have four EPs/demos out at the moment, with a full-length scheduled to be released on A389 early in the new year. I listened to the State Property EP, which is currently on distro on the A389 web page, and really enjoyed it. I love the dirty 'elephants marching' riffs mixed in with the ultrafast powerviolence. My favorite track is #8, "Hard Feelings."

Check it out:

It was announced that A389 will be working with The Bellicose Minds back in late July... I'm not sure how I missed this. Dom seems to be very stoked on this group, and I now know why... Formed in 2012 and from Oregon, they play a cool type of death rock/darkwave that a lot of people of all ages are into right now. Check out "The Spine" over on their Bandcamp. This record is also available through the A389 distro store.

The Buzz or Howl Sessions 10" will be coming out on A389 soon, check out a preview now:

A few quick tidbits to wrap this article up... We know the LEFT FOR DEAD subscription series vol. 1 is out, and it was announced that once the series is over, there will be a LP collection released on A389 that will be at a more economical price compared to the individual collector's edition EPs. Personally, I opted to buy the EP, and I very much am looking forward to the next one.

Thanks to Toxicbreed's Funhouse, it was brought to my attention that Ancient Shores have a new song out, called Pentagrammargatnep, from an upcoming EP entitled The Overwhelming Wave. There's no planned release date yet, and I actually am not sure if this will come out on A389 or not... Either way, check it out!!!

12/24/13 - edit: it's OUT NOW.
