S.H.S. Review: Merchandise - Begging For Your Life / In The City Light

Highly respected Tampa dream pop/avant-garde outfit Merchandise returns with a new single following their excellent 2013 album, Totale Nite. Members of this band have contributed to noise-punk group Neon Blud, and hardcore band Cult Ritual. This is not any sort of cookie-cutter indie station's material...

After being released on the very limited tour cassette with Chelsea Light Moving, 4AD properly treats us to this single as a single-sided 12" record.

The near 15 minute track begins with effects-laden, male/female vocals amidst spurts of brief piano & horn flourishes, and lots of dissonance. Repetition of the phrase 'Begging for Your Life' is heard throughout. A bit later, a rhythm comes in with shaker, percussion, and some bass notes. The horns and such give the listener the feel of traffic, or the chaos of things going on in the street.

About five minutes in,we get a little more structure, with some lyrics coolly arriving in the form of some verses, eventually fading away with lots more careening sound effects and the repetition of the phrase 'in the city light.' Carson Cox's voice has always reminded me of something in between Morrissey's and Nick Cave's.

This is perfect pensive, rainy day, alone in your bedroom melancholy listening, people. It can't be heavy all the time...
