S.H.S. Album Review - Manipulation: Manipulation

MANIPULATION is a Chicago-based hardcore group. I'm a little late on discovering these guys, having just noticed them in the Grave Mistake Records distro catalog. I'm glad I decided to check it out, because this is some insanely good stuff...

The album primarily consists of fast and aggressive, d-beat hardcore, especially with the first four tracks. Next, for the song "Parts And Labor," the band changes it up with more pronounced, snarling vocals and a straightforward drum beat, paying homage to classic 1980s Chicago bands such as the Effigies. Track 6, "Brain Death," is definitely my favorite song, due to the great accented punk beat, white knuckle attitude, and cool guitar dropout part near the end. The band even goes for some chugging riffs in the song "Back Of The Yards." "Plague Years" has a nice mix of the different sounds they play with throughout the album, so, if you're a quick decision maker, this might be the track to listen to first to gauge your interest in the record if you're new to the band.

This is a standout amongst many, average sounding bands playing a similar style in the midwest and east coast.

Review Score: 4.0/5.0
