SEX CROSS Played New Brunswick Last Night

SEX CROSS (best band name ever) is a gothic rock band from New Brunswick, NJ. It's members are the three guys from the excellent HC band Old Wounds. I think the fact that these individuals have gotten into two vastly different styles, and actually pull off performing them very well in two separate projects is nothing short of astounding. I've always considered myself alone in liking so much varying music. Last night in talking with some other people at this show, I found out otherwise. There was a big turnout... It was great too see a lot of familiar faces from the hardcore shows supporting this.

Sex Cross started playing only after a single red light was the only thing illuminating the basement, through thick clouds of fog pouring out of the machine on the floor. There were candles, a skull, and a vocalist donning the full-on goth gear. It was really something. I couldn't believe how much he embodied the true persona of it, with all the moves and everything. Who else does this right now?

Pete August was there doing the sound, and as the one who recorded the band, the levels were just right, just like the recordings. Overall, the new songs were great, a definite evolution of their sound, although my favorite tune is still "Sacrifice." I noticed a lot of other spectators felt the same way when it came on...

The drums were very steady and the guitarist was shredding too... Seriously, these guys really must practice a lot... how do you have two bands that are both on this level!?

Be sure to get the new 7" 'Seasons of Decay,' when it comes out on Mayfly records. I literally cannot wait to get this, and for their next show.

***P.S. I really enjoyed this other New Brunswick band that performed with Sex Cross, Called "SINK TAPES." Check them out, for fans of indie rock and Shoegaze.
