S.H.S. 7" Review - Heartless: Certain Death

Heartless is a four piece band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Formed in 2008, They have a full length out called "Hell Is Other People" on Southern Lord, and this release is its excellent follow up. They also have three other EPs in their catalog.

This EP is a brutal assault on the eardrums in an immensely stylish way. They play fast, metallic hardcore. I would describe them as drawing comparisons to Trap Them, Nails, Drugs Of Faith, and Enabler. They have this power violence shred over a bed of cacophonous noise, as well as some slower 'elephants marching' riffs. The vocals resemble Trap Them a bit, which is great, and I would say they aren't *quite* as speed obsessed or noisy as Nails. The lyrical themes revolve around aspects of personal struggle. I could listen to this in any mood, however. I could easily pit this against the year's best releases so far...
Review Score 4.5/5
