S.H.S. Local Metal Spotlight (Tri-State Area)

 Dystrophy

...is a thrash/death metal band from New Brunswick, NJ.  They lie somewhere between the old and new sounds. What makes this group specialist that they jump effortlessly between the aforementioned styles and even add in some great melodic metal partsI personally have seen them perform at RTF Fest 2011 and was blown away by their musicianship. I think I recognized the drummer from a band called 'Sick Fuck,' only a year prior to the show. If that's true he diligently got the new band's material ready in a short time frame, considering how well he performed.

Decaysia

...is a band from Bethlehem PA with members Paul Layton, Chris Spencer, Eric Vorhees, Tom Kapral, and Steve 'Crowbar' Nichols. Steve is a friend and co-worker of mine and has been wholeheartedly dedicated to the band's success since day 1 in '09. The band has made it through the lineup changes that make many of us fold, and has taken the stage with other great bands such as Freya, God Forbid, Mortician, and Wormrot. My personal favorite part of the band is the way Eric and Steve just shred - this is a guitar geek's territory for sure. Overall, each person brings different styles and strengths to the table to form a cohesive whole. I am proud to know them, and to have been a fan from the beginning, in light of the huge record they finally put out. I would say the biggest fans of this band would be those who enjoy Gojira, Revocation, Allegaeon, Machine Head, and Nevermore.

Dethroned Emperor

...is a band from New Brunswick NJ. I believe the vocalist Joe was in a hardcore band called 'Softdov.' Dethroned Emperor takes inspiration from early black metal bands like Hellhammer and Celtic Frost (their namesake) and also from deathgrind bands such as the legendary Napalm Death. This is a group that brings you blistering riffs in a dirty 80's style that would make Fenriz proud. Fans of bands that go 'weedily weedily' need not listen.

They recently played at the Stanhope House in Northern NJ recently, check it out!

(not my footage)

Joe Aversario of Dethroned Emperor also has a solo side prioject called Death fortress, described as "filthy, crushing black metal in the vein of HATE FOREST and IMMORTAL."
Check that out here:

Bible Thumper

...is a 2 piece band from New Brunswick NJ featuring Steve Hackett and Mike McGauren. Steve plays bass and runs his instrument through both a bass and guitar amp and utilizes pedals to create quite an unbelievably cacophony. We know Mike a.k.a. "Gore" from his drumming in Seasick, and he can also be found fronting the excellent hc/punk band "Ugly Parts." His contribution to Bible Thumper keeps his strong reputation intact... Relentless blast beats are accompanied by Steve's other-wordly shrieks to create a very unique record. There are moments which I'm not sure if this is black metal or power violence. For fans of Water Torture, Leviathan, and everything in between.

Additional places to purchase Dethroned Emperor and Bible Thumper products:

Pharoah

...is a doom metal band from Somerville NJ. Having mastered a certain fuzz-encrusted sludge in the basement depths, they have gained the notoriety and attracted the attention to have gotten signed on A389 Records. NJ is representing-  support these guys!!!

Disma

...is a band from Clifton NJ featuring Bill Venner, Randi Stokes, Craig Pillard, and  Daryl Kahan. Daryl is ex-Funebrarum and Citizen's Arrest. The band was founded in 2005 and is currently signed to Profound Lore, a label known for harboring like-minded 'musicians unique in nature and stature...' All megaton hyperbole aside, these guys do pure 90's Florida death metal, recorded with all analogue equipment. This is not just a gimmicky throwback, it's the real deal, and I certainly hope they will stick around for years to come.

The Sun, The Moon, The Stars

...are a band originally from West Paterson, NJ founded by vocalist Matthew Dwyer. The band released their second full-length album 'Mind Reader,' on Black Numbers this year. I know Matt through his cousins, and he is an excellent frontman, with the gnarliest beard ever, to boot. He's currently giving his namesake Matt Pike a run for his money. Seriously, I enjoyed this album better than the new High On Fire record. So, stop reading this and go get it NOW!
